Curling: A Trending Sport in Korea

After the success of the women’s curling team at the 2018 Winter Olympics, this sport is being welcomed by Korean youth as a useful form of entertainment in the cold winter.

Closing the 17-day journey of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Olympics, the host country, South Korea, won two more silver medals. In particular, here are two precious medals in the sport that Korea has never achieved high results in the previous Olympic Games.

The Korean curling team was dubbed “Team Kim” because all athletes, including coaches, have the surname Kim. In the women’s soccer final in the Gangneung Curling Center on the morning of February 25, 2018, the team fell to Sweden with a score of 3-8. This time, the four girls of the host country team did not achieve the same level of accuracy when lifting weights to the center of the circle like the previous rounds. At the end of the 9th round, although there was still one more round, South Korea shook hands with Sweden, a gesture meant to accept defeat in curling.

On the other hand, in the final of the four-person roller coaster that took place only a few dozen minutes later, the Korean team led by athlete Won Yoon-jong achieved 3 minutes 16 seconds 38. The team ranked second after four rounds of competition. The German team, led by athlete Nico Walther, achieved a match that matched the home team of Korea to the 1/100 second unit, so it also won a silver medal. Another German team, led by Francesco Friedrich, won the gold medal with a score of 0.53 seconds earlier.

Thus, the Korean national sports delegation has won a total of 17 medals, the most in the history of the Winter Olympics. At the end of the Olympics, which took place at home with a record of gold, eight silver and four bronze, South Korea ranked seventh in the overall medal table.
